 Affirmative Action Ideas

You are on the committee to revamp Affirmative Action. Please post some possible ideas about how you compromise to make each side happier.  It won't be perfect, but perhaps "better". After you post your idea, be sure to respond to someone else's idea!

  1. I think a great way to compromise is by making sure everyone gets the same access to education and the same opportunities no matter the circumstances. For example hispanic or black students who live in a rough area receiving the same education as a white student who lives in a better area. I believe that with this, there would be no need to consider race when it comes to college admissions because they were given the same education and opportunities.

    1. I definitely agree! Everyone should be able to access the same level of education regardless of race.

  2. A believe a way to compromise to make each side happy is for colleges and jobs to specifically look into each student's background and living conditions rather than just assuming purely based on their race. This way, people of all races who were not exposed to a decent education are given the same opportunities as people who were.

    1. I think this is a great idea to enforce affirmative action! Like you said, this gives people who maybe grew up with not as many opportunities more of them and a new environment to flourish in.

    2. Yes I completely agree with you! Everyone should be able to have a chance at getting into a good school and it should't be solely based off race.

    4. I completely agree. Race should not define a person's upbringing, education, or financial conditions. There is a lot more to consider and to look into than just race.

    5. I agree, I think it’s good that we look into a student’s background rather than making it based on race.

    6. I agree. This is a good way for all students to have an equal chance to get the same education.

  3. A great way to compromise so that both sides of this debate is happy is to give every student an equal opportunity. Every student no matter race or ethnicity deserves the same education. This would then take out the factor of having to worry about meeting a diversity quota. For the people who think that affirmative action rules should still be kept no matter the level of education, I think scholarships are a good way of representing this practice. Giving kids the chance to thrive because of their diversity is a different approach to affirmative action.

    1. I agree with your stance and I believe giving completely equal opportunity is a good solution. The diversity quota was one of the biggest issues when it came to critiques against Affirmative Action. This would easily solve that problem. Scholarships would certainly be an effective way of helping everybody reach their full potentials

  4. One excellent way to compromise and make each side happier is by looking at each applicant's financial background. I think the reason people are against Affirmative Action is because of how certain races are benefited while others aren't. If we disregard race and look solely at income, we can get an idea of who the actual disadvantaged students are. Race doesn't necessarily mean an individual is at a disadvantage, but income and money show a lot when it comes to the opportunities someone had.

    1. I agree. I feel that issues like these where minority groups don't have the same opportunities as their white peers are not race issues, but class issues. Looking at an applicant's financial background is definitely fairer and a more conservative-friendly option.

  5. One way we could remake affirmative action that might compromise both positions is by basing it around economic class levels and not race. Many against affirmative action argue that taking a person's race into consideration in applications discriminates against majority groups. They say, therefore, that affirmative action does the opposite of what it wants to be fighting against. However, if affirmative action took people's economic classes into consideration, nobody would be racially discriminated against. That way, people from underrepresented groups are still able to get the same opportunities as their peers.

  6. I think a good way to increase the support of Affirmative Action and compromise the two opposing positions would be to disregard race and focus on financial stability and economic class. Most of the arguments on the opposing side were criticizing the unfairness that acceptance was decided on the basis of race alone and how that puts others at a disadvantage. By focusing solely on financial and economic status, we will truly be helping those at a disadvantage and allowing those of lower economic classes to stand on somewhat equal ground with those with better circumstances. I think people will accept these terms better because this is will be supporting those who have notable abilities but aren't able to reach their full potential due to financial circumstances. Not everyone is privileged and this will make all groups more fair and equal. This also solves the issue of complaints about meetng racial quotas and rifts between people who are aided and unaided. This version of Affirmative Action will seem more righteous and fair because nobody is hurt in the process of helping.

    2. I agree! Wealthy people are fully capable of supporting themselves, so it makes sense to have affirmative action help those without as much money since regardless of race, anyone can struggle financially.

  7. I think a good way to implement affirmative action in a way that satisfies both sides is to base it on financial backgrounds/economic status. Originally endorsing affirmative action just on the factor of being a minority was not as inclusive as it intended to be. Some minorities could have advantages such as coming from a wealthy family, having private education, and having family that previously attended a university they are applying for. Though white people do have many privileges, this is not always entirely applicable. There are some non-minorities that grow up in less-fortunate conditions, and if we establish affirmative action to help those who do not have the money to pave the way through life for them, then everyone can be satisfied. This method does not discriminate against any race or gender, and addresses the problems with class differences.

    1. I completely agree with this statement. I think if we pay more attention to the students financial situation it will make it more fair for everyone.

  8. When it comes to affirmative action many people are either for it or against it. I think a great way to remake affirmative action so that everyone is for it, is by compromising and to make sure all students get an equal and fair opportunity. A way to do this is by not just basing it off a persons race but more by their financial background. When looking at a persons financial background and not just race we can see if they truly are struggling and need the help to get into a good school. This is a great compromise so that all races get an equal opportunity.

    1. Yeah I agree this makes sense. It's important to look at the financial background of people. It gives people a fairer chance to get accepted into college.

  9. One way to revamp or improve affirmative action is by not only looking at a person's race, but their educational background. What school did they go to? Did their school have good funding? Were out of school resources such as tutoring available to them? Why or why not? Is it a financial issue? There are a lot of issues to consider rather than solely focusing on a person's race. Those against affirmative action are correct when they say that colleges accept people of color to fill a quota, and sometimes they take quotas too far. There is no reason why non-minorities should be held to a high standard. Affirmative action should be a solution for minorities who did not have the same educational or financial opportunities or privileges as others. That way, those less fortunate can have a leg up into being accepted into a more selective school.

    1. I completely agree with this! Specifically looking into someone's background and history rather than their race only will be much more effective.

  10. One way I think that we can improve affirmative action is by making sure everyone gets a fair chance. Make sure to look into everyone’s background and finance history and not just race. We need to focus on their financial history to make sure that we help those who are need of it rather than those who aren’t.

  11. I believe a good way to compromise with both sides is to insure all students have an equal chance when applying to colleges. Instead of focusing on race, I think it would be a lot fairer for colleges to look at the economic background, household income, and social class of applicants. This way, everyone regardless of race or ethnicity gets a chance to have the same education.
